Malay wedding:

1)Investigate(Merisik).

The adat merisik (asking ceremony, or more literally 'spying custom') is the traditional Malay system for arranging marriages. When it is time for a young man to get married, his family will look around to identify a number of potential brides. Nowadays, the man might suggest to his family who he would like them to consider, and it may be that a romantic link already exists between the man and woman. Having decided upon one particular woman, the merisik, or investigation process, takes place. For this ceremony one or more representatives (wakil) of the man's family pay a friendly visit to the family of the woman whom they have in mind as his potential bride. The visit is purely for the purpose of further investigation, and it gives the visitors the chance to see the woman. A hint will be given to her parents regarding the purpose of the visit, and their reaction will be assessed. The woman's parents may also give the visitors some idea as to whether or not their daughter would be interested in the match. The merisik does not constitute a formal proposal. Following the visit both sides can begin to think more seriously about the possibility or otherwise of a marriage. It is possible that no progress may take place, and the man's parents or representatives will then look for another possible bride.

2)Engagement custom.(Pinangan)

The engagement custom will be held when the woman parents accept the representative(wakil) of the man's family. The date of marriage contract(akad nikah) will be discuss in engagement custom.Usually the adat bertunang (engagement custom) is normally held at the bride's home.A date will be choose to celebrate the akad nikah (marriage contract) ceremony.

3)Marriage contract(Akad nikah)

A Malay wedding proper begins with the akad nikah (marriage contract) ceremony. The groom signs the marriage contract with the tok Kadi in front of witness(saksi) and agrees to provide the bride with a mas kahwin (marriage gold). The marriage gold will be different with other place. The contract signing is done before a religious official and is accompanied by prayer.

4)Enthronement(bersanding)

The bersanding (enthronement) ceremony begins with the groom's procession with friends, relatives, musicians and people waving bunga manggar (palm blossom) to meet the bride. Each guest will receive a bunga telur (egg flower), a decorated egg with a fabric flower, as a sign of fertility. The couple are considered royalty for the day, and so various royal customs are performed for them, including musicians playing court music and 'bodyguards' performing a display of pencak silat(traditional Malay martial arts). The couple will sit on decorated chair, and the photography session will be held. After the bersanding ceremony, the wedded couple and their guests attend a celebratory feast called the makan beradab (formal meal). This involves the bride and groom feeding each other sweetened rice. The celebrations are concluded by posing for family photographs.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6679629586232874106.post-79512178736623328672010-06-08T00:01:00.003+08:002011-07-08T20:50:20.860+08:00Satay

The Congkak board has fourteen holes in two sets of seven, plus an additional store for each player. Each player controls the seven holes on their side of the board, and their score is the number of seeds in their left-hand store. The pieces are 98 undifferentiated seeds .Seven seeds are placed in each hole except the stores, which remain empty. The objective of the game is to gather as many congkak seeds into the 'storehouses' on the player's side. It is a game which is played during one’s free time .
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6679629586232874106.post-24665646416159759042009-12-20T13:02:00.010+08:002010-06-03T20:11:57.212+08:00Gasing

Gasing, or top spinning, is a traditional game popular among Malays in the olden days. In rural areas, gasing contests were held during the rice-ripening season. Kampung folks believed that the spinning tops would help bring good harvest. Both adults and children can play the game. The object of the game is to keep the top spinning for as long as possible and the player who's top spins the longest wins. This game is fast becoming extinct and efforts are being made in Malaysia to revive interest in the game by organizing top spinning competitions. The most suitable wood species are from merbau such as horns, blood merbau, merbau johol and keradah. This types of wood is soft and easy to shape. It comes with a string, which is tightly wound round a nail at the base of the top. There are five different shapes of tops: plate-shaped, heart-shaped, flat-top, egg-shaped and berembang. There is no fixed number of players and the game can be played either in teams or individually. A circle is first drawn on the ground marking the circumference within which the top is to spin. A player holds the top in his hand and grips the loose end of the string between the fingers and throws the top in the circle while at the same time pulls the string backwards which sends the top into a spinning action. The one who's top spins the longest and within the specified circle becomes the winner. Once the top spins out of the circle the player loses the game.Another variation of the game is called the striking match, whereby the player tries to knock his opponents' top out of the circle with his own. This game is known as Gasing Pangkah in Malay.Top spinning competitions are held in various parts of Malaysia, especially Malacca and Kelantan. Here huge tops weighing up to 5 kg are used which makes it more a game for men. Great skill is required to spin these huge tops.

Roti canai is a type of flatbread found in Malaysia, often sold in Mamak stalls or malay restaurant. It is known as roti prata in Southern Malaysia and Singapore.Roti canai is circular and flat bread.Often eaten together with (the tarik), or ice tea. Usually served with gravy dal or parpu or curry with sambal ikan bilis.Tastes best when taken for breakfast or in the morning. It must be eaten with the hand. There are two ways to make roti canai that is either to twirl it until the dough becomes a very thin sheet and then folded into a circular shape or to spread out the dough as thinly as possible before being folded. Then the folded dough is grilled with oil. The first method is more popular and faster than the second. The term 'roti paratha' in Malay means 'plate bread'.In English and in Chinese, roti canai is sometimes referred to as flying bread.
Wau or Kite in Malay is a uniquely designed Malaysian kite that has flown since times past. It is called 'Wau' because the shape of its wing is similar to an Arabic letter (wow). It is a marvelous tradition inherent to the culture of the people, especially in the Eastern States of the Malayan Peninsula.Wau game is one of the traditional game of the Malays since hundreds of years before. Today, the kite is still widely found in the traditionally rich states like Kelantan and Terengganu.Wau is usually played during the harvest time. The game contains elements of native Malay culture. This can be seen in the form of patterns and designs found on the wau.Main ingredients to make wau is bamboo, yarn, paper, glue and a knife shape. Wau has four main parts, namely the head, wings, tail and waist. In making a wau, bamboo is used for the frame. The bamboo is split and soaked in mud for two weeks. It is because to make the frame more flexible and long lasting.Framework that has been completed will be affixed with three layers of paper thin and transparent with different colors.Normally the wau is played by two people, one people will hold the wau and the other one will hold the rope.
